Bethesda Master Bathroom Built for Relaxation & Function

This master bathroom remodel in Bethesda was part of a full home renovation, transforming an older property into a modern retreat. The homeowners wanted more than just an update. Their goal was to create a beautiful spa-like space that balanced luxury with everyday practicality. The wish list was ambitious: a walk-in steam shower, a freestanding soaking tub, a dedicated makeup vanity, and plenty of cabinetry for storage. A separate toilet area was also added for privacy, making the bathroom feel both functional and elegant.

Project Challenges

Older homes often reveal surprises once demolition begins, and this project was no exception. To properly build the steam shower, we had to waterproof not just the walls but the entire ceiling using the Schluter system. This ensured the shower could withstand years of use without moisture damage. When the ceiling was opened, it became clear that it wasn’t structurally strong enough to support the large-format porcelain tiles chosen for the design. Our team reinforced the framing, upgraded insulation, and integrated new ventilation. These steps not only supported the design but also improved comfort and energy efficiency.

Key Materials/Brands

The homeowners chose a combination of high-end materials and finishes that balanced durability with timeless style. Villeroy & Boch Vilbostone Plus porcelain tile was used throughout the bathroom, adding both elegance and strength. At the center of the design sits a FloorCo soaking tub with a quartz surround, providing a modern focal point and a space for daily relaxation. Storage was maximized with Adura custom cabinetry, including a dedicated vanity area for convenience. Sleek Kohler fixtures were selected for their reliability and clean design, while the Schluter waterproofing system and high-performance grout ensured long-lasting protection against moisture. To enhance comfort, heated floors were installed, and the project was completed with custom glass shower doors that add clarity and a polished finish to the space.

Results

The completed bathroom now feels like a private spa inside the home. The steam shower features a spacious bench, custom tiling, and precise waterproofing for durability. The soaking tub offers a daily retreat, while heated floors keep the space warm and inviting even in the colder months. Custom cabinetry and vanities provide ample storage without compromising style, and modern lighting brings brightness to every corner. By reinforcing the ceiling, waterproofing with Schluter, and using high-quality grout, the bathroom is designed to last for decades with minimal maintenance.
